Real Public Safety and Criminal Justice Reform
Build Safety; Stop Harm
Real Public Safety & Criminal Justice Reforms
I believe a fundamental function of government is to protect its citizens from harm. The health and safety of Ypsilanti Township residents are principal reasons why I’m running. We must have a safe community for all residents. I grew up and live in one of Ypsilanti Township’s neighborhoods where crime has been and still is a major concern. I’ve seen what works and what doesn’t. That’s why I’m committed to:
Supporting safe and thriving communities with policies that ensure accountability and are rooted in public health
Increasing access to existing mental health, education, training, housing, drug treatment programs, and other social services. Washtenaw and Southeastern Michigan have a wealth of resources Ypsilanti Township residents already support with their tax dollars. As Supervisor I will work to ensure they’re being utilized.
Reducing harm from the criminalization of poverty
More than 80 percent of all arrests are for low-level, nonviolent offenses and conduct related to poverty. People who can’t pay court fines and fees for minor violations face license suspensions and jail time for their inability to pay. As Supervisor I will work to reduce our court’s reliance on cost and fines.
Center dignity and minimize the harms to people impacted by the criminal legal system
Law Enforcement has inflicted devastating long-term personal, social, and economic harms on specific communities in Ypsilanti Township. Lack of access to education, excessive fines and fees, and other punitive practices traumatize people who have contact with our legal system. As Supervisor I will recognize this reality and commit to reducing the harm caused by it.
